2010 South Jersey Nursery and Landscape Conference
South Jersey Landscape and Nursery Conference (Glassboro, NJ) – On November 30, over 70 participants from around the state met at Masso’s Crystal Manor to hear speakers from each segment of the Horticulture industry talk about marketing trends, business practice, and issues facing business owners in New Jersey.
We were honored to have the day start off with an address by New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas Fisher. He reminded us that the department is working every day to advance agriculture in New Jersey, and he also talked about the Jersey Grown Program for Nursery Stock. Keynote speaker Marcus VandeVliet shared cash flow strategies to help struggling and successful businesses alike survive though a tough financial environment. The morning was rounded out by a strong panel discussion on emerging marketing trends, most notably the necessity to diversify to meet constantly shifting consumer demand.
The afternoon session saw landscape professionals and nurseryman split up for more focused sessions. The landscape meeting featured Jeff Charlesworth of Quercus Studio LLC discussing landscape design and was wrapped up with a panel discussion on major issues in the snow removal industry, led by Ray Cole and Jeff Shrock from Elite Landscaping. On the nursery side there were good speakers talking about insect pest in nursery production, new products, and applying creative marketing strategies.
There was much time for learning, networking, and enjoying the day. The program was interesting, but not as well attended as previous years. If you have any ideas or comments on how to improve the content, promotion, or attendance of this annual south Jersey conference, please contact our office at 609-291-7070 or via email, [email protected]. Next year’s program is scheduled for November 29, 2011.
